How to Stabilize Footage in DaVinci Resolve
Understanding Stabilization Types
Before applying stabilization, identify what your footage needs:
- Smooth tracking effect: replicate a gimbal-style shot
- Camera lock: eliminate unwanted movement from stationary shots
The Edit Tab Method
Access stabilization by highlighting a clip and finding the Stabilization option in the Inspector. Click Stabilize to begin analysis.
Fine-Tuning Options
- Camera Lock: tells Resolve the footage should have no movement
- Zoom: zooms in to hide movement at frame edges
- Cropping Ratio: controls zoom after stabilization
- Smooth: addresses larger unwanted movements
- Strength: reduces micro-jitters
Stabilization Modes
- Perspective: analyzes perspective, pan, tilt, zoom, and rotation
- Similarity: handles pan, tilt, zoom, and rotation
- Translation: addresses pan and tilt only
The Color Tab Method
Navigate to Color and select the target icon to access the Tracker tab. Many editors report better results using the Color Tab.
Important Considerations
Post-production stabilization is helpful but not a replacement for proper technique. The best results come from careful shooting.
