Where AMR files come from

AMR is the speech codec of GSM phone calls, used by old handset voice recorders, MMS audio and some call-recording and voicemail systems. Files are tiny because the codec only encodes the frequency band of speech.

What changes when you convert AMR to MP3

EncodingAMR narrowband decoded and encoded to MP3 at LAME V2
BandwidthStill limited to roughly 300 Hz to 3.4 kHz, as recorded
File sizeGrows, because MP3 is less specialised than a speech codec

Worth knowing first

The converted file will sound exactly as narrow as the original, because AMR discarded everything outside the telephone band at recording time. Converting buys compatibility, not fidelity, and no amount of processing recovers what was never captured.

FAQ

Why does my converted recording still sound like a phone call?

Because that is all the source contains. AMR is built for speech over a phone network and keeps only about 300 Hz to 3.4 kHz. The MP3 faithfully reproduces that narrow band, and the missing frequencies were never recorded.

Why does the file get bigger?

AMR is extremely specialised, spending as little as 5 kbps on speech. MP3 is a general music codec and uses far more data even for the same voice. A larger MP3 is the normal outcome.

Can I improve the voice at all?

A little. The Noise Remover can clear hiss and hum, and the Audio Normalizer can even out the level. Neither adds bandwidth, so it will still sound like a phone recording.

Is this AMR to MP3 converter free, with no upload?

Yes. Conversion happens locally in your browser via FFmpeg WebAssembly — your audio never uploads. No signup and no watermark. Length is limited only by the memory your browser gives this tab, which is far smaller on a phone than on a computer.
