AVI is unsupported by macOS Preview and modern Apple editors. Converting to MOV gives you a file that opens with double-click and imports into Final Cut Pro.

Where AVI files come from
Old AVI archives, typically camcorder captures or downloads from the DivX era, heading into an Apple editor that will not touch them.
What changes when you convert AVI to MOV
| Container | AVI rewritten as QuickTime MOV |
|---|---|
| Video | DivX, Xvid or MPEG-4 re-encoded to H.264 |
| Audio | MP3 or PCM re-encoded to AAC |
Worth knowing first
AVI files of this vintage are frequently interlaced and sometimes carry audio that drifts. Neither is corrected here. Check the converted clip for comb lines on motion before you build an edit around it.
FAQ
Will this fix an out-of-sync AVI?
Progressive drift, where the gap widens as the clip plays, is usually fixed because the audio is resampled to the video clock. A constant offset present from the first frame is not, and needs nudging in an editor.
Why does QuickTime refuse my AVI?
QuickTime only decodes a narrow set of codecs, and the DivX or Xvid inside most AVI files is not among them. FFmpeg still decodes those, which is how the conversion succeeds where the player fails.
Should I target MOV or MP4?
MP4 unless a specific Apple app requires otherwise. It plays in more places and the quality is identical.
Is this AVI to MOV converter really free and without upload?
Yes. The tool runs entirely in your browser using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your AVI file never leaves your device — open the DevTools Network tab to verify zero uploads. No signup and no watermark. The practical size limit is the memory your browser gives this tab, which is generous on a computer and a few hundred megabytes on a phone.
