M4A files from iPhone Voice Memos or Apple Music need to be unwrapped to WAV before importing into a DAW for editing.

Where M4A files come from
Voice memos and podcast audio arrive as M4A and need to become raw samples for a DAW, a transcription tool, or forensic and legal work where a compressed file is unacceptable.
What changes when you convert M4A to WAV
| Encoding | AAC decoded to uncompressed PCM |
|---|---|
| File size | Grows roughly tenfold |
| Further loss | None, because WAV is lossless |
Worth knowing first
No quality is added, but none is lost either, which is exactly why this is the right first step before editing. Do not convert to WAV and then back to a lossy format repeatedly; each lossy round trip compounds.
FAQ
Will this recover what AAC threw away?
No. The WAV is a faithful uncompressed copy of the decoded AAC, artefacts included. Its value is that nothing further is lost while you edit.
Why do transcription tools ask for WAV?
Because decoding is one less thing to get wrong, and some speech engines expect a specific sample rate and bit depth. Supplying WAV removes that ambiguity.
Is this the right format for archiving a voice memo?
Only if the memo matters enough to justify ten times the space. FLAC is the better archive choice: also lossless, roughly half the size.
Is this M4A to WAV converter free, with no upload?
Yes. Conversion happens locally in your browser via FFmpeg WebAssembly — your audio never uploads. No signup and no watermark. Length is limited only by the memory your browser gives this tab, which is far smaller on a phone than on a computer.
