Where VOB files come from

VOB files live in the VIDEO_TS folder of a DVD. They hold MPEG-2 video with AC-3 audio, plus menus, chapter markers and subtitle streams, and are split into roughly 1 GB pieces across the disc.

What changes when you convert VOB to MP4

VideoMPEG-2 re-encoded to H.264
AudioAC-3 re-encoded to AAC
ExtrasDVD subtitle streams, chapter marks and menu structures are dropped

Worth knowing first

A feature on a DVD is usually spread over VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB and so on, so converting one file gives you one segment rather than the whole film. Convert each part and join them with the Video Merger. Commercial DVDs are also normally encrypted with CSS, and an encrypted VOB will not decode here.

FAQ

I converted a VOB and only got 20 minutes. Where is the rest?

A DVD splits the feature across numbered VOB files of about 1 GB each. You converted the first segment. Convert the others in the same VTS group and join the results with the Video Merger to get the complete film.

Why does my commercial DVD fail to convert?

Retail discs use CSS encryption, and an encrypted VOB cannot be decoded without first removing that protection, which this tool does not do. Home-made and unencrypted discs convert normally.

What happens to the DVD subtitles?

They are dropped. DVD subtitles are bitmap images in their own stream rather than text, and MP4 has no good home for them. If you need them, burn them in with a desktop tool before converting.

Is this VOB to MP4 converter really free and without upload?

Yes. The tool runs entirely in your browser using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your VOB file never leaves your device — open the DevTools Network tab to verify zero uploads. No signup and no watermark. The practical size limit is the memory your browser gives this tab, which is generous on a computer and a few hundred megabytes on a phone.
