What Adobe Audition is

Audition is a dedicated audio editor rather than a video one. It has two faces: a waveform view for repairing a single file, and a multitrack session for building a mix from dialogue, music and effects. Its reputation rests on the repair tools — spectral frequency display lets you see a noise as a shape and paint it out, which is a different proposition from a filter applied to the whole track. It round-trips with Premiere, so a sequence can be sent over, mixed and sent back.

Runs on macOS, Windows.

Where it is the right choice

  • Repairing audio that a filter cannot save — a cough, a chair scrape, a hum at one frequency
  • Building a real mix with dialogue, music and effects on separate tracks, with automation over time
  • Anyone already editing in Premiere, where the round trip is the reason to use it rather than anything else

Where it stops fitting

  • Subscription only, and a second application to learn on top of the editor.
  • Overkill for the common cases: levelling a voice, removing steady background noise, cutting a clip.
  • It is audio only. Anything you fix has to go back into the video somewhere else.

Jobs you can do here instead, free and without uploading

Plenty of what sends people to Adobe Audition is a single operation rather than an edit. These run in your browser, so the file never leaves your device and there is nothing to install or subscribe to.
