What Final Cut Pro is
Final Cut Pro replaces the conventional track-based timeline with a magnetic one, where clips attach to a primary storyline and ripple automatically instead of leaving gaps. It is tuned tightly to Apple hardware, and on Apple silicon it plays back and exports notably faster than cross-platform editors on comparable machines. It is sold once rather than by subscription.
Runs on macOS.
Where it is the right choice
- Fast turnaround on a Mac, where the hardware tuning is most visible
- Editors who prefer the magnetic timeline once they have adapted to it
- Buying an editor outright rather than renting one
Where it stops fitting
- macOS only, so a project cannot move to a Windows collaborator.
- The magnetic timeline divides people, and habits from track-based editors do not transfer cleanly.
- Interchange with other editors is weaker than Premiere's or Resolve's.
Jobs you can do here instead, free and without uploading
Plenty of what sends people to Final Cut Pro is a single operation rather than an edit. These run in your browser, so the file never leaves your device and there is nothing to install or subscribe to.
