HEVC (H.265) to H.264 Converter — Free, Online, No Upload

HEVC is half the size of H.264 but blocked on Chrome, paid on Windows 10, and missing from older Macs. Converting to H.264 once gives you a file that plays everywhere.

Why use this HEVC (H.265) to H.264 Converter?

  • Chrome and Firefox refuse to decode HEVC inside MP4 / MOV.
  • Windows 10 needs a paid HEVC codec from the Microsoft Store.
  • Old Macs (pre-2017) and many Smart TVs cannot decode HEVC at full speed.
  • Default CRF 23 keeps quality visually identical — file size grows ~1.5–2× because H.264 is less efficient.

How to use it

1

Drop the HEVC file (.mp4 or .mov) into the converter

iPhone HEVC exports, GoPro HERO 7+ files, and DJI drones are all supported.

2

Pick H.264 / MP4 as the output codec

AAC is selected automatically for the audio track.

3

Download — file now plays on Windows, in Chrome, on Smart TVs

Verify in any player to confirm. The new MP4 is universally compatible.

What to watch out for

The file gets biggerH.265 is roughly twice as efficient, so the H.264 version of the same quality is roughly twice the size. That is the trade you are making for compatibility.
10-bit becomes 8-bitiPhone HEVC is often 10-bit HDR. Converting to 8-bit H.264 can wash out highlights or shift colour — check a bright scene before deleting the original.
It is slower than it looksHEVC has to be decoded before H.264 can be encoded, and browser decoding of HEVC is the slow half. Expect longer than a same-codec operation.

FAQ

Why does HEVC not play in my browser?

HEVC requires patent-licensed decoders. Chrome and Firefox refuse to bundle them; Safari plays HEVC because Apple holds licenses. H.264 has no such restriction.

How much bigger will the H.264 file be?

Roughly 1.5–2× the HEVC source for visually-equivalent quality. A 100 MB HEVC clip becomes a 150–200 MB H.264 clip.
