Where BMP files come from
BMP is the uncompressed Windows bitmap, dating from the late 1980s. It survives in old software exports, some scientific and industrial instruments, and screenshots from legacy Windows tools.

Worth knowing first
BMP stores every pixel at full size with no compression at all, so a 4000 by 3000 image is around 36 MB regardless of what it shows. Almost any modern format is smaller. Choose PNG rather than JPEG if the image is a screenshot or flat graphic.
FAQ
Why is a BMP so enormous?
Because it applies no compression whatsoever. Size is simply width times height times bytes per pixel, so the content makes no difference. It was a reasonable design when disks were small and processors were slow, and it has not aged well.
JPEG or PNG for a BMP?
JPEG for photographs. PNG for screenshots, diagrams and anything with text or flat colour, because it stays lossless and still shrinks the file enormously compared with BMP.
Does anything still produce BMP?
Some industrial and scientific instruments, a few legacy Windows applications, and certain capture tools. It is rare to meet one by choice.
Is this BMP to JPG converter free, with no upload?
Yes. The image is decoded and re-encoded in your browser using a Canvas + Wasm pipeline — it never uploads. No signup, no watermark.
