Worth knowing first
Transparency does not survive, and how it is flattened matters. Anything transparent becomes white here, so a logo designed for a dark background will look wrong. Keep the PNG when transparency is part of the image.

What happens to the transparent background?
It becomes white. JPEG has no alpha channel, so every transparent pixel needs a colour, and white is the safe default. If the image will sit on a dark page, keep the PNG or export with the right background from your design tool.
Should I convert screenshots to JPEG?
Usually not. JPEG compresses smooth gradients well and sharp edges badly, so text and interface lines pick up visible fringing. PNG or WebP keeps screenshots crisp. Save JPEG for photographs.
How much smaller will it get?
On a photograph, dramatically, often a fifth of the size or less. On a screenshot or a flat graphic, sometimes barely at all, and occasionally larger, which is another reason to leave those as PNG.
