What Descript is

Descript transcribes your recording and then treats the transcript as the timeline. Deleting a sentence from the text removes it from the video. That inversion makes it unusually fast for dialogue-driven work, and it carries a set of features built on the same idea: removing filler words in bulk, evening out speaker levels, and regenerating a misspoken word in a synthetic copy of the speaker's voice.

Runs on macOS, Windows, Web browser.

Where it is the right choice

  • Podcasts, interviews and talking-head video, where the edit is decided by what was said
  • Stripping filler words and long pauses across a long recording in one pass
  • Teams where the person doing the rough cut is a writer rather than an editor

Where it stops fitting

  • The transcript-first model gets in the way once the edit is driven by picture rather than speech.
  • Recordings upload for transcription, which matters for interviews under NDA or subject to privacy rules.
  • Colour, compositing and precise motion work still belong in a conventional editor.

Jobs you can do here instead, free and without uploading

Plenty of what sends people to Descript is a single operation rather than an edit. These run in your browser, so the file never leaves your device and there is nothing to install or subscribe to.

Questions about Descript

How is transcript editing different from a timeline?

You delete a sentence from the text and the corresponding video is removed. For interviews, podcasts and talking-head footage that is far faster than scrubbing a waveform — and it is only faster when the edit is driven by what was said.

Is it a replacement for a real editor?

For dialogue-led content, often yes. For anything where the cut depends on what was shot rather than what was spoken — action, music, B-roll rhythm — the transcript is the wrong index to edit on.

What about the footage I do not want uploaded?

Transcription needs a server, so the media goes up. That is the trade. Cut the sensitive sections out locally first, or keep that material out of the workflow entirely.
