AI Background Removal with Runway

Green screens have been the industry standard for isolating subjects from their backgrounds for decades. They work well when you have a controlled studio environment, the right lighting, and time to set everything up. But most content creators — YouTubers, social media producers, indie filmmakers, corporate video teams — shoot in offices, living rooms, or outdoor locations where green screen setup is impractical or impossible.

Runway's AI-powered background removal changes that equation entirely. Using a machine learning model trained on millions of video frames, it can identify the boundary between a subject and their background with remarkable precision, even in challenging conditions: uneven lighting, hair and fine detail, moving subjects, and complex backgrounds.

How AI Background Removal Works

Traditional background removal techniques rely on color difference (chroma keying) or manual rotoscoping. Chroma keying requires a uniform green or blue background. Rotoscoping requires a human artist to trace the subject's outline frame by frame — an extremely time-consuming process.

Runway's AI model takes a fundamentally different approach. It analyzes each frame of your video and uses learned patterns of what humans and objects look like — their shape, texture, the way edges meet backgrounds — to predict a high-quality matte: a per-pixel mask that distinguishes subject from background. This happens automatically, without any special studio setup, and processes the entire clip without manual frame-by-frame work.

The result is a video clip with the background removed, which you can export as a transparent alpha channel video (typically in Apple ProRes 4444 format) and place over any new background in your editing software.

Step-by-Step: Removing a Background in Runway

Step 1: Upload your footage. Log in to Runway and go to the Remove Background tool from the AI Tools menu. Upload your source video clip. For best results, use footage shot with a stationary or slowly moving camera, good exposure, and a subject that is clearly distinguishable from the background.

Step 2: Review the automatic mask. Runway will process the clip and display a preview with the background removed. Examine the edges of your subject carefully — particularly around hair, loose clothing, and fast-moving limbs.

Step 3: Refine the mask if needed. If any areas are incorrectly masked — for example, a bright shirt being partially removed along with a bright background wall — you can use Runway's brush refinement tools to paint corrections. Mark areas as "foreground" (always keep) or "background" (always remove) and the AI will update its prediction accordingly.

Step 4: Export with transparency. When you are satisfied with the result, export the clip with alpha channel transparency. Runway supports ProRes 4444 export, which preserves the transparency data. If you plan to use the clip in a web-based workflow, WebM with alpha is also an option.

Step 5: Composite in your editor. Import the transparent clip into Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or any other NLE. Place it on a track above your chosen background — a solid color, a still image, another video clip, or a motion graphics background — and the subject will appear naturally composited into the new environment.

Tips for Better Results

Shoot with separation in mind. Even without a green screen, you can improve AI background removal by increasing contrast between your subject and background. A dark jacket against a light wall, or a light shirt against a dark doorway, gives the model clearer signals.

Avoid busy or high-contrast backgrounds. Intricate patterns, stripes, or backgrounds with colors similar to the subject's clothing make it harder for the AI to draw clean boundaries. Simpler backgrounds produce cleaner mattes.

Watch the hair. Hair is the most difficult element for any background removal technique. Ensure your subject's hair is well-lit and has visible contrast against the background for the cleanest edge detection.

Use a tripod where possible. Handheld camera shake can cause slight inconsistencies in the mask between frames. A stable shot gives the model a more consistent reference and tends to produce smoother results.

Grade after compositing. Once your subject is on a new background, color-match them to the background lighting. Even a perfect matte will look fake if the subject is lit warmly and the background is cool and blue. A few adjustments in your color panel can make the composite feel seamless.

Practical Use Cases

AI background removal in Runway is immediately useful for a wide range of projects:

  • Talking-head videos: Replace a home office background with a branded graphic or virtual set
  • Tutorials and explainers: Float the presenter over screen recordings or diagrams
  • Social media content: Drop subjects into stylized, on-brand environments without a studio
  • Corporate video: Create consistent presenter visuals across footage shot in different locations
  • Indie film and music videos: Achieve composited VFX shots without a green screen budget

The tool dramatically lowers the barrier to professional-looking compositing work. What once required a dedicated studio and hours of rotoscoping can now be accomplished in minutes, directly in a browser, with results that are often good enough for broadcast-quality production.
