What VFX covers
Compositing and motion: keying a background out, tracking something to a moving shot, masking a region, and animating what sits on top. This is the section where the software does matter, because the tools differ sharply in how they handle nodes, tracking and render order. What travels between them is the thinking: a shot that was lit for a key is worth more than any amount of work on a shot that was not.
| Key | Separating a subject from its background, which is mostly decided by how the background was lit. |
|---|---|
| Track | Making an element follow the camera, so it belongs to the shot rather than floating over it. |
| Composite | Layering the result so the edges, grain and colour match the plate. |
